The M249 Light Machine Gun (LMG) formerly designated the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) and formally written as Light Machine Gun, 5.56, M249, is the American adaptation of the Belgian FN "Minimi", a light machine gun produced by the Belgian company FN Herstal (FN). The M249 has seen action in every major conflict since the United States's invasion of Panama in 1989, eventually replacing the heavier M60 GPMG. The M249 is gas operated and air-cooled, with a quick-change barrel that allows the gunner to replace an overheated barrel. A folding bipod is attached near the front of the weapon for stability and the M192 LGM Tripod is also available. The M249 is unique for it's ability to use both linked ammunition as well as STANAG magazines like those used by the M16 and M4 this allows the SAW gunner to use a rifleman's magazines as an emergency source in the event he runs out of linked rounds.
